"computa zinaongena kwa router" (Brian Cooper)

I set up the computers at the LWF office in Kibungo and spent a few hours teaching both yesterday and today. Joram seems like a good candidate for maintaining a webpage and I hope I'll work more with him later. I had about 4 students yesterday, all Swahili speakers, so that's what I taught in-- though if there's a Swahili word for router, I don't know it. The office is well equipped with computers, though they're all stand alone, so I hope they'll make good use of the networking equipment we carried.

Viruses are a problem. I was trying to help someone with a spreadsheet today and I realized that the issue was simply that Excel was not behaving as it should. I want to find a virus checker that I can puton a floppy and that they can update with a floppy because the internet connection is very limited.

A virus is often spread through floppy disks. Be sure to check them before allowing them to be moved from one PC to another. Someone may innocently bring in a floppy from another location with a virus on it. Take steps to discourage the use of floppies for anything but church business. I would suggest that you assume that all floppies, including those that you broght with you, have a virus. --Rick Cooper

you might try downloading firefox. although it may be difficult to get them to use it reguarly, it seems to have more security than IE. If nothing else exposure to the browser and the open-source concept might capture some people's interest in computer dev. basic lessons on not opening unexpected attachments would be worthwhile. if you check out symantec or google some virus defs they'll often include common email subjects. devloping an ability to recognize suspicious subject lines would be valuable.
